Summary:

Hard Gainer Extreme is an affordable weight gainer, with a balance macro profile, and sensible calorie count per serving. It's not a gourmet shake, but it does the job, and tastes decent in the process.

The term ‘hard gainer’ gets thrown about on bodybuilding forums a lot. They are typically considered ectomorphs, people that have a hard time gaining weight due to a very fast metabolism. I like to refer to them as lil bitches.

What is so god damn hard about eating. The nation is suffering from an obesity epidemic, and then i hear about people who “struggle to eat”. What is so hard about face planting a tub of peanut butter (yeah im a peanut butter addict), or necking some weight gainer shakes (yes weight gainer supplements do work). Good job im reviewing one today then isn’t it!

MyProtein have a range of weight gain shakes to help hard gainers plow calories into their diet. Hard Gainer Extreme is one of their leading mass gain supplements.

Myprotein Hard Gainer Extreme ReviewMyProtein Hard Gainer Extreme Overview

Hard Gainer Extreme is a high calorie, weight gain supplement containing a protein blend and carbohydrate blend.

Unlike other weight gainers that pack Hulk Hogan Python size calories per serving ( see our mutant mass review which packs over 1000 calories per serving), Hard Gainer Extreme offers a modest 440 calories per 100gram serving (roughly 3 large myprotein scoops).

It contains a protein blend of 5 different proteins, along with a high carbohydrate blend, and a moderate fats.

Hard Gainer Extreme Ingredients

Lets look at those crucial G’s of P, and take a look at the Hard Gainer protein blend.

Whey Protein Concentrate

We’ve looked at a number of whey protein concentrates on the site, including reviews of impact whey, gonutritions whey protein concentrate, Whey Protein 80 from The Protein Lifestyle and The Protein Works Cherry Bakewell whey concentrate.

Bottom line, is that whey protein concentrate is the most affordable, popular, and widely used protein supplement. It offers 80% protein, with a small amount of fat and contains lactose.

Milk Protein Concentrate

Similar to Micellar Casein protein, milk protein concentrate is a casein & whey protein blend.

Hydrolysed Whey

This is the most expensive form of whey protein. It undergoes a filteration process so that your body can easily digest it. It is the fastest absorbing protein available.

Hard Gainer Extreme

Calcium Caseinate

Again, similar to Micellar Casein, this is a slow releasing protein that will drip feed amino’s to your muscle for upto 6 hours.

The My Protein Hard Gainer Extreme protein blend provides an excellent range of fast and slow releasing proteins. This ensures that your muscles will be drip fed protein, rather than spiking blood levels from just a fast acting protein.

The carb blend consists of;

Maltodextrin

A complex, high gi carb, which is perfect to use intra workout, post workout or as a carb source throughout the day.

Waxy Maize Starch

A complex carbohydrate source that is easily digest by the body.

Fructose

Sugars from fruit.

A blend of complex, fast and slow acting carbs ensures that insulin won’t be spiked, so you don’t store fat. The carbs from Hard Gainer Extreme provide a sustained energy release, which also doubles as a perfect post workout carb source.

The remaining ingredients are;

Flaxseed Flour, Inulin (Fructo-Oligosaccharide), Cocoa Powder (chocolate and cookie & cream flavours only), Flavouring, (MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides), Colouring (Beetroot Red [strawberry flavour only]), (Curcumin [Banana flavours only]), Sweetener (Sucralose® [flavoured options only]), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin). *From Milk

The addition of micellar casein and isolate would have been a nice addition. However given the price point, along with the inclusion of clean carb sources, and hydrolysed whey means that this is value for money, with little filler.

Who Can Benefit From Hard Gainer Extreme?

The biggest candidates are those lil bitches, sorry I mean “hardgainers” I referenced in the opening paragraph.

Anyone who struggles to put on weight, and I dont just mean muscle, I mean weigh in general, would benefit from this.

Hardgainers typically need a big caloric surplus, which is evident only after establishing macros. If you need to eat a large caloric surplus, and have a small appetite, then you will benefit from taking any weight gain supplement, such as Hard Gainer Extreme.

Simply drinking this alone isn’t enough to gain weight though.

People think something with “weight gainer” or “mass gainer” in the title will automatically make them into the next Benedikt Magnusson or Kai Greene.

Hard Gainer Extreme is a weight gain supplement. It is designed to supplement your diet, as an easy way to increase your calories and hit your required macros.

Providing you have a rough idea of how many calories you need to either maintain bodyweight, then consuming any amount over that will lead to weight gain.

Just how much you gain is up to you, do you want to gain lean muscle tissue, or just go all out for mass and bulk like the hulk?

That’s your call. Either way, Hard Gainer Extreme from Myprotein can help but it wont magically make you jacked.

Taste / Texture

Hard Gainer extreme takes a bit of mixing, because of the amount of powder you need. Aslong as you follow the directions and mix with plenty of water or milk – then you’ll have no problems.

If you’re trying to cram this into a mini shaker though, I hope you like your shakes pasty.

As for taste, its quite sweet, which I enjoy, but I imagine some may find it to be on the sickly side.

The flavours available are;

  • Banana
  • Chocolate
  • Chocolate Mint
  • Cookies & Cream
  • Strawberry
  • Vanilla

The vanilla or cookies & cream is probably the sweetest, so if you don’t like the sickly flavours, avoid that. You can never go wrong with the chocolate flavours from my protein. So if you’re looking for a safe option – pick up the chocolate or chocolate mint flavour.

hardgainer 1The Bottom Line

Hard Gainer Extreme is a pretty basic, and cost effective weight gain supplement.

Packing 382 calories in 1 serving (3 scoops) you’re getting a balanced macro profile, and decent total calorie count. It never left me feeling bloated, unlike some of the higher calorie protein shakes out there.

For me, Id typically eat anywhere between 40-80g of carbs, 30-50g protein in a “standard” meal.

Hard Gainer Extreme packs 46g carbs and 32g which is more than ample. Having 3 of these a day in between breakfast, lunch and dinner means you’re adding almost an extra 1200 calories to your diet.

Sure, there are other weight gainers out there packing more calories per serving, but do you really need that many calories in one sitting? Probably not.
