The Protein Bakery Review – Protein Baked Goods From a Healthy Bakery

The Protein Bakery Review After months of dieting for a show, the last few weeks always always seem to plague me with cravings for foods that I would never normally want to eat. Cookies, donuts, cherry bakewells, brownies and cake.

The Protein Bakery have obviously clicked onto the cravings of not just bodybuilders, but anyone wanting to lose weight, and made a slew of protein snacks that are a little more fat loss friendly.

The Protein Bakery specialises in making protein packed snacks, lessening the sugar or fat intake, in an effort to make a high protein, more filling treat. We’ve reviewed myprotein protein cookies, protein chox protein bars, along with other protein snacks in our supplement reviews section. So what separates The Protein Bakery from the rest of the pack? Should you order a bakers dozen of their goods, or stick with the butcher and the candle stick maker?

A Bakers Dozen – Protein Baked Goods

Lets first of all take a look at what I received from The Protein Bakery in this supplement haul video.

Believe it or not, this is just a very small selection of flavours that they offer. Our myprotein review section boasts about the range of protein powder flavours they offer in both their true whey & impact whey protein powders. However when it comes to the MyProtein protein Cookies, the choice of flavours is somewhat lacking.

The Protein Bakery could set up as a healthy cookie company with the amount of flavours they offer. Not only do they offer a great range of high protein cookie flavours, their baked products offers the following protein packed snacks:

High Protein Cookies

  • Cinnamon Cashew Cookie
  • Chocolate Cashew Cookie
  • Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie
  • Oatmeal Ginger Raisin Cookie

High Protein Brownies

  • Chocolate Chip Brownie
  • Walnut Brownie
  • Black and White Blondie

There is so much more choice available on the US store as well. With cookies available in oatmeal and cranberry, oatmeal chocolate chip, peanut butter and more. It will be nice to see The Protein Bakery UK add more variation to their baked products selection, to match their US counterpart. However the Protein Bakery UK is still a great cookies bakery, and for a dieter, offers some of the best cookies in the world.

Healthy Bakery

Cookies from the protein bakery, as well as their brownies are all given an extra layer of thought. Not only are the protein bakery recipes packed with protein, many of their mail order cookies, and brownies, are gluten free. The are also high in fiber, free from trans fans, free from wheat flour and free of preservatives.

Because the protein bakery recipes are supplemented with protein, their goods are more filling, and contain less sugar and fat than regular cookies or brownies. This makes them a healthier choice of treat for those dieting. Note: i say treat. Simply having the ‘protein’ in a products title doesn’t make it healthy. Whilst the protein bakery does offer healthier baked goods, these are still cookies at the end of the day. They still contain some fats and sugar. Simply adding these to your diet won’t make you lose weight, or gain muscle. No food will. However incorporating these into your diet in a sensible manner will help you reach your fitness goals.

Now how exactly do we define what is ‘healthy;. A Protein Bakery Brownie for example has 315 calories, 9 grams of protein, 18 grams of fat, and 27.5 grams of carbs. So this isn’t exactly a low calorie food.

Compare this to a standard brownie, of equal portion.  A typical brownie will contain on average, 21g fat, 36g carbs, 4.5g protein for a total of 336 calories.

Whats great about The Protein Bakery is just how filling and dense these snacks are. After finishing the brownie, i was pretty stuffed. Far more so than if i’d have ate a regular brownie.

The Protein Bakery Brownie would definitely be my choice of the 2, but remember that this is by no means still a low calorie snack. Id much rather pick up a protein bakery cookie over a pre-packed, preservative filled pack of supermarket biscuits to!

Fresh From The Oven

As nice as a pre-packed protein cookie, or protein bar might be, It doesn’t capture the same taste as a freshly baked cookie. Some taste awesome, some taste artificial, but none taste quite like a freshly baked cookie from your local bakery. The Protein Bakery changes the rules when it comes to taste and texture of protein snacks.

They cook in small batches, every day, from scratch. With a 2 week shelf life, you know that what you’re getting is fresh and authentic. You won’t find anything here with a shelf life for 2 years in advance.

If you want that fresh out of the oven warmth, then simply microwaving any of these protein cookies or protein brownies for 5-10 seconds will give it that authentic touch. If you manage to resist all temptation and actually not eat your entire order within its 2 week best before date, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. The brownies taste great fresh frozen as well, no need to warm them up!

The Low Down

So how did these healthy protein cookies and brownies stack up to the real thing? Funnily enough I don’t have much of a sweet tooth… usually. I say that because until I started competing in 2013 I hadn’t ‘craved’ a cookie, brownie or biscuit in the longest time. I would very rarely eat them. Never would i feel overcome with a craving to go out of my way to get some.

However when I decided to get ready to compete and cut in 2013, after 14-16 weeks of dieting, cravings start setting in. Foods i hadn’t ate for years, my body was crying out for. As such i’ve got experience of eating a fair few treats post show.

How does the Protein Bakery stack up to conventional goods? It topples them. Seriously. A fresh basked cookie trumps marylands from the supermarket everytime. A fresh baked, high protein cookie simply destroys it.

Warming my brownie up for just a few seconds in the microwave actually made me want to eat more. I can’t tell if this is a good thing, or a bad thing…. I think its a good thing. These things are so moorish. Perhaps not the best for someone wanting to lose weight, but if you can control yourself (or if you’re bulking) then nock yourself out!

The cookies did not disappoint either. I love anything that has oats in it. Porridge, Flapjacks, granola. Anything oaty. So safe to say the oat cookies were my favourite. I also have quite the appetite for cinnamon, and these were absolutely unreal. Remember I said that eating these won’t make you lose weight? Well that is true (especially if you have no self control, as you’ll want to eat more and more of these). However, I would much rather eat these cookies, helping me hit my protein intake, fiber intake, and not consuming as much fat and sugar as regular cookies. Its hard to believe that something can taste so good, without it being too unhealthy…. If it fits your macros….right?

What Do Non Gym Goers Think?

I often give my fiance, parents, brother and sister protein snacks and healthy snacks telling them to try them. It normally goes like ‘taste this, its got not sugar and is high in protein’ they taste it, pull a face, and won’t taste anything else i give them for a few weeks.protein bakery high protein cookies

What was strange is when I opened this parcel, my Mam was moving the box and looked inside. She was immediately asking me when I was opening them. Its rare that my Mam actually asks to try some of the protein foods I have lying around the house. So what did a non gym goer think of these?

She couldn’t tell that these were ‘healthy cookies’. She loved them. She had to save her cookies to have with a cup of tea (she’s so traditional) but when she had them, I could tell she wanted more. My Mam isn’t the type to ask for more, but I can tell when I offered her more, she wanted them. I don’t blame her either!

The box which contained quite a few different products, ultimately did not last long. Between myself, my fiance and Mam & Dad, the box quickly went. Each of the products had an authentic, baked goods taste. The cookies came in packs of 2. I personally feel just 1 would be too small, but that might be because i have a big bulking appetite. 1 was enough with a cup of tea for my Mam, but for me personally I wouldn’t be content until I would have eaten 2. The brownies and blondies are the perfect snack size, and are actually a decent size to share.

If you know anyone into working out, fitness, or diet, then the protein bakery would make a gift.

Final Words

The biggest thing I want to stress here is that these cookies and brownies, or any ‘protein snack’ will not magically make you lose weight. I’ve already mentioned that, but i want to stress it.

No food will make you lose weight. Exercise, eating right, and being consistent is what lead to weight gain. The same can be said to anyone looking to gain weight.

However if you’re looking for a high protein snack to substitute your regular junk food, or are looking for a cleaner way to ‘cheat’ on your diet, The Protein Bakery is an excellent choice. Hell you can even factor these high protein cookies or protein brownies into your macro intake, and enjoy them guilt free. Unlike regular biscuits, cookies from the Protein Bakery contain a good enough protein to carb/fat ratio to factor them into your diet, and hit your macros.
