A Conversation With The Worlds Strongest Deadlifter, Benedikt Magnusson

CPDC: Women often say men will never experience pain like childbirth. However no one other than yourself has ever deadlifted 1015 lbs. Describe how it feels lift such a tremendous amount of weight.

BM: I actually Feel no pain when performing a deadlift with that weight.

What age did you start lifting weights?

I started lifting when I was 17, and im now 30. So i’ve been doing this for quite some time.

What motivated you to begin working out?

I got really out of shape from a spinal injury when I was younger. I also had a very bad diet from eating at an American school.

What made you lean towards strongman as opposed to bodybuilding?

I just do what is fun. To me strong man is more fun than bodybuilding. Bodybuilding training is fun, but not very intense in comparison. Following a bodybuilding split for too long gets boring too quick. Strongman never get boring for me.

On your twitter profile we often see you enjoying the snack range from My Protein. What are your favourite high protein treats?

Myprotein Impact Whey ReviewI love protein shakes. I find that they make you recover so much faster. As we all know for strongman or bodybuilding, we need to eat a lot of protein. If not for protein shakes I would have to eat so much more food, and it would make life much harder.

Keeping bodyfat down at this level of strength is a tricky equation already, unless willing to settle for second place.  So protein shakes ! I  LOVE proteinshakes.

What is your favourite cheat meal?

Pizza or Lasagne. Its a tricky one to answer!

Talk us through a typical week of training, how many times a week do you train and what does your split look like?

There is no typical routine or split. When one wants to be an athlete, one must constantly evolve and not get stuck doing the same thing over and over. For the last 5 weeks it has been 1: Loglift, shoulders 2:Squat Stretch Cardio 3:Rest 4:DeadLift 5:Rest 6:Competition Events 7:Rest

What is your regular rep range for working out?

I don’t have a regular rep range for exercise. My reps are dictated by my goals at the time.

Powerlifting, strongman and strength training obviously involves lifting heavy weight for low reps. Do you ever switch your training routine up to incorporate higher reps?

Powerlifting, strongman, and strength training does not only involve lifting heavy weights for low reps. Unless you are after very average results. As i’ve said, if you want to be a champion you need to constantly evolve and adapt. This means training in a number of ways and not just getting stuck doing 1 thing over and over.

What are the core exercises that you feel are a necessity to carry out, in order to perform at your level?

Sprints and DeadLift.

How does your diet look like? Do you stick to a set amount of carbs proteins and fats a day?

I make sure I always get enough protein in. For me this is number 1. Something like Impact Whey from MyProtein or any of their protein powders helps me hit my protein intake.

Did I mention I love protein shakes (haha).

I then just eat according to what I am doing that day or the day after if I need to. And drink more than enough water. Always drink plenty of water.

You might have a hard time finding clothes to fit your frame haha. You’ve seen awesome success in your career from winning Icelands Strongest Man and holding a deadlift world record. What is the 1 tip you’d share to a young athlete wanting to follow in your foot steps?

You live once on this world. Be happy. Love to win !
