Summary:

Snap, crackles & crap. Protein Crispies are a confusing, puzzling protein supplement that have a case of identity crisis. They maybe useful as a cooking ingredient, but should not be consumed alone.

Snap, crackle & crap is the best way to sum up ‘Protein Crispies’ from Myprotein.co.uk. Never have 3 simple words described a my protein supplement so easily.

For year’s i’ve tried many My Protein Supplements, many of which my thoughts can be found in the myprotein review section. In my impact whey protein review I explained why it was part of my core supplement stack for years. Often their supplements are higher quality, cheaper alternatives, to popular supplements on the market. For example their Hurricane XS is a fantastic maximuscle cyclone alternative. Occasionally they will innovate and create brand new protein supplement’s which are great. Then you get the brain farts of the supplement world. These are better known as the protein crispies. Just what the f&*k are protein crispies thought? Read our entire Myprotein Protein Crispies Review to find out.

What Are Protein Crispies

As described on the product page “Protein Crispies are light, whey isolate crisp balls approximately 3-4mm in diameter.”. The picture shows a bowl of what looks to be something resembling kellogs rice crispies. The final product you receive is definitely not what is pictured on the website. Think about ordering a Steak, and getting a tin of spam. That’s probably the best way to describe the product you’re actually going to receive.

Myprotein Protein Crispies are part of the Myprotein snack range. They are small, unflavoured crunchy balls.

I think Myprotein marketing these as protein crispies is a bad call. Protein crunchies or protein crunch balls would be a more suitable description. Before receiving my bag of protein crispies I honestly expected them to be very similar to rice crispies. Perhaps my hope were too high after completing the myprotein protein pancake mix review. After they had nailed an authentic pancake texture and taste, with 100% less guilt and 100% more protein, I was expecting a bowl of high protein rice crispies. How wrong I was.

Protein Crispies Taste & Texture

As i’ve explained the actual product differs vastly to the picture you can see on the myprotein site.  The product picture and description would have you believe they are similar to kellogs rice crispies. The texture and taste is nothing like rice crispies however. These are savoury, not sweet, however I honestly can’t associate a taste with them. The best way to describe them is tasteless. They leave somewhat of a powdery after taste in your mouth after a few mouth fulls. High in protein though!

I first tried a handful of them just to see what they were like. I wasn’t impressed however I thought they would be much nicer with milk, and eaten as cereal. Eating them with milk, like a bowl of cereal is a far more enjoyable way to eat them. Whilst I wouldn’t say they taste bad, i would just say they don’t taste at all. I really don’t see the appeal of eating them in this manner however. To me a protein snack such as a protein pancake, or protein bar should satisfy your sweet tooth, in the form of a healthy high protein snack. Protein crispies contain the protein, but without the flavour or satisfaction. I could never imagine myself thinking ‘i could really go for a bowl of those great tasting myprotein protein crispies’.

Not All Bad…

Rice Crispies

I’ve spent this entire protein crispies review so far bashing this protein snack. Protein Crispies do redeem themself as an ingredient for healthy snack and high protein recipes.

I love making a protein dessert using myprotein casein protein powder. My personal favourites are choc nut or cookies and cream. This makes a perfect, healthy protein dessert. Adding protein crispies into this dessert really gives it an extra layer, and makes you feel like you’ve ate more. It sounds silly but having a crunch texture as part of the dessert is the icing on the cake for me.

There are of course other way’s you could use protein crispies as part of your protein recipes. Perhaps as a topping on protein muffins, part of a protein flapjack, or a biscuit topping. The possibilities for cooking are endless. So perhaps reviewing them as a high protein cereal, or cereal replacement is the wrong way to think of Protein Crispies from Myprotein. However they are marketed in such a way that a person would believe these to be a substitute for Rice Crispies.

Whilst I personally believe his supplement is flawed, more so I believe that it is the marketing of this product by Myprotein which is flawed. If they were to advertise it as a recipe ingredient, I believe I would have had a completely different mind set when trying these.

The Verdict

As a stand alone product I would definitely not recommend myprotein protein crispies. They are just a pointless product. There are dozens of regular foods that provide better nutritional profiles, and provide a better taste. There are dozens of protein supplements with better nutritional information, and taste way way better, just check out our supplement reviews section to find out what they are.

That being said however, if you’re the type of person who enjoys experimenting with protein recipes and healthy cooking, then i would at least recommend giving 1 bag a try. You might find they add a new dimension to your treats and desserts, like I did with my casein protein dessert. They aren’t the cheapest of supplements, however they will last. Whilst you may burn through a 500 gram bag of whey protein in just a few days, these things are almost weightless, so they will last you, especially if you’re just using them as an ingredient in protein snack recipes. You can of course pick these up cheaper using a myprotein discount code.
