A big thank you for being with us today Si. Yes or no answer – can you eat healthy without having to sacrifice taste?
Yes haha!
I thought you’d say yes haha. Sum up The Diet Kitchen for us.
Firstly, thank you very much for this opportunity! I really appreciate it Adam! So, in a few words, it’s where healthy foods actually taste good! And also where you can find scientifically backed knowledge on Nutrition and some random vids to.
What was your inspiration for starting the Youtube channel?
Honestly, there was a couple big names I followed (naming no names) and I kept making their recipes and I got really annoyed that it didn’t taste that nice and I just wasted my time, macros and ingredients and with my background as a professional chef I hated this so started making my own, posting them on Fitness and bodybuilding forums and people were loving them! So my brother said to me one day, “Seeing as all you do is watch YouTube why don’t you start putting your recipes on there” and literally that day I thought why not and got right on it!

Your background is as a nutritionist. Without this background, do you think you’d have had the same success as you have with the Diet Kitchen?
I think it definitely helps and gives the channel another dimension instead of “just cooking”, it also allows me to put out more content as well as there is a lot more topics to cover nutrition wise and also a lot less time recording and editing 😉
You pump out a lot of great recipe’s in your videos. Do you cook like this every day for yourself?
Honestly….Nope! haha. There’s a secret behind most chefs (don’t tell anyone..) from my experience working in restaurants, they all eat really lazily outside of work! Most of my collogues were fast food junkies or plain sandwich people, when you cook for a living and taste food all day I guess you just can’t be bothered to do it for yourself! So most days I eat pretty darn boring foods, maybe once a day I’ll try out a prototype to next go on the channel but that’s about it unfortunately 🙁
What would your advice be to someone who says they want to lose weight, but can’t give up the tastes of their favourite foods?
There’s no need to people! As long as you have a calorie deficit and you’re getting in plenty of goodness then spice, season and experiment with your food as much as you want 🙂 Always be open to trying new things too, creativity sparks brilliance.
You use a lot of MyProtein products in your videos, tell us why you opt to use Myprotein.
It’s the first supplement company I ever used about 8 years ago when I was a sports addict and it was the company I kept going back to after trying others years on, they’ve supported me from the start of my channel even sharing the recipes I made that looked awful video quality wise and that told me they had faith in my vision and they’ve supported me ever since, which is rare to find in people let alone massive companies and I’ll always appreciate that! I’d always recommend MyProtein to anyone! (You can find a full list of our Myprotein Discount Codes which will entitle you to savings of up to 50% when ordering at myprotein.)
What are your favourite supplements?
My favourite supplements would have to be whey protein (check out our Impact Whey Review), Omega 3’s, Creatine Monohydrate, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C. Why? They’re proven to work and they’re inexpensive, i’ve wasted my money on A LOT of supps over the years that turned out to be snake oil and I don’t want others doing the same.
What is your regular supplement stack?
The above apart from Creatine really as I can never remember to take it! lol
Which supplements do you find yourself using most often in recipes?
In terms of supplements whey is a staple of mine, instant oats if you can count that as a supplement but apart from that everything else counts as food technically lol
Of the recipe’s you make, which is your favourite?
Oooh that’s like asking me to choose my favourite parent! If i had to choose, i’d say my Peanut Butter Chicken as you don’t have to struggle to fit it into macros no matter how low someone’s might be oh and it’s delicious!
For those reading and want to try one of your recipe’s, but feel as though they belong on can’t cook won’t cook, which recipe would you recommend to them? What is the easiest to follow and not make a mess of?
Either of these recipes I reckon mate as baking is a lot less hard to mess up than say, frying is!
and if they’re really bad in the kitchen then there’s no way they can mess this one up haha
Outside of the kitchen, you’re obviously invested in lifting and working out. What is your preferred training methods?
Some would say I don’t even lift but hey 😛 Yeah before I got injured which I still am unfortunately I was a competitive powerlifter so a lot of my training has been strength based but since I discovered Upper/Lower splits I don’t think i’ll ever turn back to be honest, it’s defo the most optimal in terms of training for the natural athlete because of the frequency.
What is your current goal for training. Are you looking to trim down for summer, add some mass, do you have any aspirations to compete in physique contests etc?
At the moment i’m just trying to recover from a trap and neck tear which i’ve had for the last 14 or so months so training for me currently is just being able to train lol once recovered i’ll probably aim to enter physique or bodybuilding as i’m too scared to powerlift again (yes i’m a wuss!)
How would you recommend someone changes their diet when looking to add muscle mass, compared to when they’re looking to lose body fat?
Don’t be scared of carbs they’re your best friend and take things slow, a 10% surplus will be sufficient to add muscle mass every week whilst gaining as little fat as genetically possible for yourself for some this is hardly anything, for others it could be 50:50 ratio muscle:fat gain no matter how slight the surplus is.
Talk us through a day’s diet for someone looking to drop body fat, what would you recommend?
I like to see someone eat 3-5 meals a day with some discretionary calories added in also, around 200ish cals a day to be allotted to what ever foods they like and the rest coming from nutrient dense foods. 2-4 portions of fruit and the same for veg, fibre rich carb sources if possible and a good chunk of omega 3’s. If you follow this a basic guideline you can’t go wrong longevity wise. Your brain and your body will thank you for it.
What are your current plans for The Diet Kitchen and future videos?
Honestly, I haven’t got a clue! I’ve always been a get an idea and act on it immediately kind of guy for most things! Once I can train 100% and macros are up i’m planning to do eating challenge videos which should be fun!
Do you have any other projects lined up for the future?
I’m planning a cookbook for The Diet Kitchen which hopefully should be finished by the end of the year if I get my butt moving!
Thanks for your time Si, any final words for our readers?
