This is another guest post by my good friend Ross, aka Smokey, a member of the Muscletalk Forums. You can check out his profile here.
Hey Guys
Smokey here again with some more random information you may find interesting while your sat on the thrown. Gyms are expensive that’s a fact as true as squat racks are not for curls. Right then as non of you know (‘cos I’m not some FB addicted guppy) I work away from home. The best thing about working away from home is the money… no matter if your away 2 days or a month the worst is leaving the gym at home.
Now you can bang a bodyweight workout till the cows come home, and you can do push ups as slow as you like no way does this replace iron… You might as well buy some tight pink shorts and take you ever fading gains and do zumba.
Now then now we’ve established you’re a true man of iron, what do you do when away from the creature comforts of home, and your regular gym? Most hotels frown at bed press and TV curls… so that so out. What else?? Well if you’re away from your regular gym and home for a month you need to bite the bullet and take out a second gym membership. I can blag you a weekend of free gym possibly a week but a month come on this isn’t American Hustle.
It doesn’t matter how much money you save on supplements using our discount codes for myprotein or other bulk bodybuilding supplement retailers if you’re getting screwed on expensive gym memberships. Here is what you need to do to get the best discount gym memberships, and make your money last.
How To Blag a Free Gym Workout
First of all – PLANNING. Where you going? Where you staying? Has the hotel got a gym? If it has why the fuck are you reading this….? If it hasn’t what gyms are close? Will you have your car? Do you want to run to the gym? So make a list of all the gyms that are accessible. Now you need to put these into two piles. Commercial and Independent.
Independent Gyms
These are better for short periods of time, trickier for longer. Find them on FB (Everyone has FB). Message them be upfront and honest… actually don’t do that! Lie like fuck. Your new to the area. You need a new house of pain. Can you get a session before you sign up?! Do you do discount if you pay for the year. Now he he’s seeing the ££ not the fact your wanting a free session… What’s the worst he can say…. If you can hit this on two or three gyms you might be able to cover your trip.
Commercial Gyms
These are easier… by far. There big machines that chew people up and spit people out they prey on the January fitness group, sign them up for 12 months and then make a mint because lets face it, its not January… and there not going back. I feel kinda bad lying to an independent and 90% of the time if it’s a good gym I just pay.
However the likes of Pure Gym, 365 Gym and DW there all fair game. Google them there’s always a voucher floating around for a free pass or a week’s pass. Another good option is phone or email them. Use the same approach as the Independent except you can push these more and there turn over is generally a lot higher.
Say you and your partner are look to join can you get a free pass to look around… grow some balls ask for a week. Then when it pays of its just you.. so you’ve got double the time. Also DW offer you a session if you wander in and say you’re thinking about joining.

Other Sneaky Tips To Get A Free Workout
Two other options that are a little harder to pull off. Find the local Shreddy Brek wanna be and tell him you’re in the area. Do you want to do a session together he might sort you out with a pass to the local heavy lifters club (Don’t try this with Adam he’s far too tight). This is better planned out if you’re ripped or a tank.
If you’re a fat arse who curls more than he squats… good luck. Secondly try something new like Cross fit there always throwing taster sessions out… just make sure you don’t make eye contact with any of them there all weird and you don’t want that bunch following you home.
Like I say it’s all about the planning. Whether you’re a bodybuilder, crossfitter, powerlifters or just a casual weight lifter, your gains all live and die by your ability to plan. This is true when it comes to budgeting as a bodybuilder, and blagging cheap or free gym memberships when travelling.
You have nothing to lose and even if they say no you’re never going to see them again so no face is lost. Another good tip is to leave a positive review on any gym sites or on Facebook so other people know free sessions is a possibility. Also remember if you have the option use the commercial gyms the independents are getting pushed out by them might as well help a little. Share the love guys, come on.
Anyway I’m off to watch the latest Shreddybrek videos and eat ice cream… bulking… honest. You mad bro?
Smokey
