First impressions, so far so good!
Oomf Bench Pressed Oats are a high protein porridge, available in large boxes, or convenient single portion tub sizes. I’ve worked my way through a few of their flavours, but the question is, should you?

Overview
Bench Pressed Oats are a protein fortified porridge. Sounds fancy right?
It’s really just a high protein porridge.
Just how high are we talking though? Here is the nutritional value for the Banana Bench Pressed Oats. Each flavour differs very slightly, but its a good representation
Per 100g – Banana Flavour
Protein – 27.7g
Carbs – 56.6g
Fat 4.4g
A typical, regular 100 grams of oats would contain around:
Protein – 10g
Carbs – 60g
Fat 8g
Of course each brand of porridge will be slightly different, but thats a pretty good representation.
Oomf Bench Pressed Oats pack over double the amount of protein that normal oats do, roughly the same amount of carbs, and about half the fat.
As the Lego movie song states…. EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!
Is it a good quality protein though?
Yep!
The ingredients, in the apple, sultana and cinnamon flavour are
- Oat Flakes: Porridge oats. This whole-grain carbohydrate contains soluble fibre and beta glucan. Beta glucan helps reduce cholesterol levels.
- Skimmed Milk Powder: A low fat source of protein and high in calcium. This helps us feel fuller for longer and helps to maintain healthy bones & teeth.
- Whey Protein Concentrate (15%): The most common form or protein supplement available. Whey Protein concentrate contains a full amino acid profile, and is a great way to hit your protein intake. This allows your muscle to repair and re-grow bigger and stronger.
- Xylitol: Natural sweetener (less calories than sugar and promotes healthy teeth too).
- Sultanas (6%) & Chopped Apple (3%): An antioxidant packed source of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
- Cinnamon Powder (<1%): Taste just like Christmas!
So as you can see, the ingredients used are all top quality.
I’ve reviewed a number of whey protein concentrate supplements including impact whey, gonutrition whey 80 and TPW 80. It’s one of the best quality sources of protein available, so you know that the additional protein in Oomfs protein porridge is good.
Taste
I’ve tried all 3 flavours. Their apple, sultana & cinnamon, chocolate and banana.
I personally did not care for the apple, sultana and cinnamon. The cinnamon flavour was very slight, and i did not enjoy the lumps of apple and sultana in my porridge. It just didn’t feel right.
The other 2 flavours were perfect though.
Neither tasted over powering or artifical. Sometimes when I add my own flavouring to porridge, the end result is like something that went wrong in a science lab.
Oomf’s porridge flavours have just the right degree of subtleness to make them enjoyable, without feeling overpowering.
Do we need more protein in our porridge?
We (should) all know the importance of protein when it comes to maintaining and building muscle.
Because of this, many new products are hitting the fitness food / supplement market, boasting an increased protein content.
One of the most useful things about Bench Pressed Oats by Oomf, in my opinion, is the convenience factor.
Convenience
Bench Pressed Oats are pretty convenient for those who don’t typically eat enough protein.
If you don’t know how much protein you should be eating, as a general rule of thumb, its safe to go with 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight.
For anyone who isn’t a bodybuilder or athlete, in which life revolves around training and diet, cramming this much protein into us, especially around work & family life isn’t always easy.
By having a serving of porridge that contains double the amount of protein as regular porridge makes hitting your protein that much easier, without any additional effort.
On top of which bench pressed oats come in boxes of oats, ready to make as regular porridge. They also come in smaller, single serving sized tubs. Simple add hot water and you’re good to go.
Value
This is where im a bit torn.
As a bodybuilder, im quite meticulous when it comes to planning and budgeting. Its a trait!
I picked my boxes of bench pressed oats up from Tesco, during a “lifestyle event” they were running. This promoted high protein snacks, “health foods” and the like. When the event had finished, Tesco had a lot of overstock. They sharp began to slash prices, and I got a few boxes of Oomf bench pressed oats, for what I considered to be a fair price (i can’t remember how much they were)
A quick search online returns a 500 gram box of bench pressed oats for £3.99. Bare in mind you can get a 1kg bag of regular oats for 75p.
The increased cost is obviously attributed to they whey protein.
However even still, buying a whey protein supplement, especially using our protein discount codes, you can make your own high protein porridge.
Of course that’s how a bodybuilder thinks, planning. I have a feeling that Oomf isn’t particularly catering towards the bodybuilder crowd, rather a general fitness audience.
Verdict
There is definitely a degree of convenience in bench pressed oats. They’re easy to make. They contain double the amount of protein as regular oats. They taste good. They’re easy to make.
Plenty of benefits.
For me, the only area this falls down on is the price.
That’s not to say they are pricing themselves out of the market. The price tag is “about right” and competitive with similar products in the space.
However im much more of an overthinker. I’ve been making protein porridge at home for years, so straight away I jump to that comparison.
I did enjoy my boxes of bench pressed oats, as im sure you will to.
The end bowl of porridge, when using bench pressed oats, was superior in every way to using regular supermarket value oats. The consistency and texture was perfect.
They aren’t a product i’ll keep stocked up on as i would regular oats or whey protein. However, because of the convenience, taste, nutrition and solid ingredients profile, they are something i’d have every now and then.
If you don’t want the hassle of having to buy protein, mix it in yourself, and are just looking for a healthy, great tasting food, then definitely give these a try.
