Sweet Spreads Coconutter Review – All Natural Flavoured Coconut Butter

You guys know the drill by now, im a pretty big peanut butter addict. In my quest to find the best nut butters & spreads, I stumbled upon a sweetly sounding delicate, that set my spider senses tingling… which is long winded talk for; i found something i had to try.

It wasn’t until 2014 when my Fiancee introduced me to some coconut tasting yoghurts (and eventually coconut scented bath lotion – don’t judge me), that I really got a taste for coconut. Prior to that my only experiences with coconut had been a bounty chocolate bar when I was a kid… these were always the last to go out of the tub of celebrations at Christmas time in our house.

Browsing through Cardiff Sports Nutrition, I found along with my new found love of coconut flavours, and scents, i decided i had to go grab myself a LOVE-A-LEE bunch of coconuts, and stand them in a row.

Which is why I decided to give the Sweet Spreads Coconutter a try.

What Is Sweet Spreads Coconutter?

Coconutter from Sweet Spreads is a range of all natural, flavoured, coconut butters. They are available in 6 different flavours, 3 of which i’ve tried;

1. Vanilla Cupcake
2. White Chocolate
3. Cinnamon Roll
4. Dark Chocolate Mint
5. Chocolate Brownie
6. Maple Pancake

The 3 flavours i’ve tried in my video taste test, and will be covering in this Sweet Spreads Coconutter Review are;

1. Vanilla Cupcake
2. White Chocolate
3. Cinnamon Roll

I’ll be covering the taste of each later in this piece (and you can check the taste tests out in the embedded video review) however, I first want to talk more about what these coconut butter’s are, and what they’re used for.

Not a Straight Peanut Butter Substitute

So prior to getting these i’d seen a lot of people dubbing them as a “substitute for nut butter”. Well I took that on face value, and in the most literal sense.

Im a peanut butter tub & spoon kind of guy. Sure it’s nice on rice cakes, bagels, toasts, perhaps even off the nipple of your significant other (or the drunken mess you’ve invited back to your house who you will regret ever speaking to when you wake up in the morning – but i digress). However straight off the spoon is where it’s at for me.

Upon receiving my 3 flavours of coconutter, i did what any self respecting nut butter loving bodybuilder would do. Tear off the lid and dig into the jar with a spoon.

Learn from my mistakes…. do not do this.

Coconutter is not meant to be eaten straight from the jar. If it is, then the creator, sure has some funky taste buds.

A thick layer of dried coconut oil sat on top of a mildly flavoured, dry & crumbly base. Digging in to the jar with a spoon made easy work of the coconut layer. However upon touching base with the “butter” part of the jar, i came to a dead stop.

It took some real effort to begin piercing into the flavoured part of the coconutter. Almost like a sandcastle that has dried, and refuses to be destroyed at the end of a long day at the beach.

The thick and short of it is – coconutter is not meant to be eaten from the tub. Shame I didn’t know this before trying it…..

How to use Sweet Spreads Coconutter

Upon further research, and by research i mean looking on instagram & twitter, i discovered that people melt this before spreading it over stuff. Or more commonly, they use it recipes for baking. Making tasty treats like these protein coconut bites.

So for me, Sweet Spreads isn’t a straight up swap for my regular nut butter, as i love eating it off the spoon.

I did eventually try heating it up, and tasting it spread over bagels, which i’ve got to admit was a lot nicer than straight out of the jar. I’ll cover that in the taste section of this review however.

When warming these up, I took the lid off and put the jar into the microwave. Im not sure if you’re “meant” to do this, but that’s what I did. The coconut oil/butter at the top softens, and makes stirring the entire content of the jar easy. The end result is something that resembles a natural nut butter.

Ingredients & Macros

The ingredients for each differs slightly depending upon which flavour you go for. Each flavour however uses only natural ingredients. So if you’re on “junk” watch, or don’t favour “half natty” nut butters (adding in oils etc) then you can rest assured that eating Sweet Spreads means you’re still natty for life.

The macros for each flavour, are all pretty decent. Each of these coconut butter offers a good serving of healthy fats, with minimal carbs, and low sugar – whilst packing a variety of different flavours.

From a nutritional point of view, they do make a good substitute for your nut butter, however that’s the only way to compare this to a nut butter in my opinion.

Taste Test

This is the meat & potatoes of the review. If it tastes like crap, then the macros are irrelevant. Well lets get down to business.

Regardless of which ever flavour I tried of the 3 I bought, the coconut was the most obvious taste. It wasn’t a case of “ooo white chocolate, with a slight hint of coconut”. The taste of each variety of Sweet Spreads is coconut, with a hint of what ever flavour you pick.

Cinnamon Roll

This had a strong “spice” taste to it. Not quite on the level of eating cinnamon straight off a spoon, however the spice was quite strong, and quite over powering. This almost seems contradictory to my above statement, however bare with me. Even though the spice was strong, the actual “sweet” flavour of the cinnamon was subtle.

I’ve tried many cinnamon inspired nut butters, from Peanut Butter & Co to Nuts n More. Where as the nut butters are “sweet”, this wasn’t so sweet. I was disappointed, massively, especially given the name of the product is “sweet spreads”.

When warmed up, melted and mixed, this was a lot better. The taste of the cinnamon was intensified, and the texture made it alot nicer. Still not nice enough to eat off a spoon, however spread over a cinnamon & raisin bagel thing, i enjoyed it.

White Chocolate

The crumbley part of this had a pleasant white chocolate taste. It’s subtle, not overpowering, almost the perfect blend of flavouring, without becoming too sickly. However the coconut layer again was just such an overpowering taste.

When warmed up and mixed, the white chocolate flavour remained subtle. The consistency obviously improved, however the taste of coconut far outweighed the white chocolate flavouring. If you’re a fan of strong coconut flavours, then you’d probably enjoy this.

However, for me, again I was disappointed, as i expected something more sweet, and a stronger white chocolate taste.

Vanilla Cupcake Frosting

This should just be called “vanilla” in my opinion. Of the 3 flavours I tried this had the strongest flavour. It was probably the strongest tasting when mixed with the coconut layer.

I was expecting this to be more like frosting, however just like MyProtein supplement’s have funky names for their protein powder, i think its just marketing. If this was simply called “vanilla” it would be a more accurate description.

Of the 3 I tried, this was my favourite, also when warmed up.

Don’t Do What I Did

So there are probably many of you just shaking your heads, or face palming that we actually tried eating this out of the tub. I know I face palmed when I found out AFTER filming the video that people warm them up and spread them over things.

If you’re looking to get some Sweet Spreads Coconutter, don’t try and eat it out of the jar. It’s an absolute let down, and in all honesty, a jar of crap.

HOWEVER, using them as you’re “meant to use them” (I.E – warm them up , mix them, or use them in baking) I can see the appeal.

In my defence (and also Ben’s – my co-taster in the video review), we weren’t aware of this, and there was nothing on the tubs to say about heating them up.

Sweet Spreads Coconutter – The Verdict

Having taste tested 3 flavours, thought about them, looked online to see how other people use them, all before actually writing my Sweet Spreads Coconutter Review, i’ve came to what i’d consider a pretty educated “verdict”. Remember this is my opinion and my opinion alone.

I personally wouldn’t bother ordering these again – unless I had a specific recipe in mind that would benefit from using coconut butter.

To just eat it, requires the thing to be warmed up, mixed, and the coconut flavour is a little too overpowering for me. It’s definitely not a contender to be used as a substitute for nut butters.

If you’re a regular baker however, then you might wanna give this a go.

Ultimately, I was expecting something else here. I was expecting a sweet spread, that was derived from coconuts as opposed to nuts. Pretty much like the flavoured nut butters i’ve tried in the rest of the Nut Shot Review Series.

I cannot outright call this a bad product, as I obviously was expecting it to be something that it wasn’t. However that being said, I also cannot recommend it based on my own experience of tasting each of these flavours.

TL;DR Version If You Don’t Read this Entire Sweet Spreads Coconutter Review

Buy this if you;

• Use coconut butter’s in cooking, and are looking for different flavours to add to your baked goods
• Love the taste of coconut, and would like a very subtle flavour to go alongside that coconut. Heat it up and spread it on your toast, bagel, or whatever

Dont buy this if you;

• Don’t already use coconut butters for baking
• If you’re expecting a sweet spread to spread over your toast, bagels etc
• Are an idiot and try and eat it straight out of the jar

Where To Buy Sweet Spreads Coconut Butter UK

I got mine from Cardiff Sports Nutritions. They sell the full size jars – 15oz, and smaller sample jars – 4oz. They’re price, in my opinion, on the high side. £6.49 for a 4 oz jar, and 12.99 for a 15oz in jar. Im not sure how this compares to “regular” coconut butters, but in comparison to even protein fortified nut butters, this is highly over priced.

Your Thoughts on Sweet Spreads?

Maybe i’ve been too harsh on these. Its no secret I was expecting something more comparable to a nut butter straight out of the jar. Maybe im just an idiot (more than likely)
