Myprotein’s Protein Dessert is an indulgent mousse like or angel delight style pudding derived from slow and fast acting protein’s with very little fat or sugars. It’s an alternative to the standard protein shake, and comes in handy when you want to ‘eat’ as opposed to drink, or if your sugar cravings are high, but don’t want to break your diet.

How the hell can you make a protein dessert though? When my family first saw me eating this, and asked what it was, they couldn’t believe it.

Well this MyProtein Protein Dessert is packed with 30 grams of protein per serving, and, as mentioned above, contains a blend of fast acting whey protein, along with slow releasing casein protein.

What’s In This Protein Dessert?

The protein blend used in Protein Dessert is made up of

The casein and caseinate are the slow digesting proteins, and are what gives this supplement its dessert type texture. Whey protein is the fast absorbing protein (and the most common protein supplement within the fitness industry), whilst the egg white protein powder is a medium release protein.

Combined together, this protein blend gives your body a tapered release of protein, not spiking your blood levels, and keeping you fuller for longer. The inclusion of the xanthan gum is what really sets off the auethentic dessert like texture, along with providing a great fiber source.

When Can You Eat Protein Dessert?

Because this is a protein blend, its perfectly fine to have it any time of the day, as a high protein snack between meals, or as a dessert following a meal.

I personally like to have my protein dessert in the evening, as this is when i feel like having something sweet. Depending on how hungry I am, i’ll have it after my evening meal, or i’ll have it about half an hour before bed. Another benefit with having it in the evening is because this protein dessert contains casein protein, its slow releasing nature will drip feed my muscles through the night.

Unlike a regular protein shake (Whey or casein) which many people have every day, I see protein dessert as more of a ‘luxury’ product.

Not because its overpriced, or because it’s got a bad macronutrient profile. Just because I don’t feel the need to have a dessert every day. Its a great high protein snack to have every now and again when you fancy something out of the norm.

How To Make MyProtein Protein Dessert

This is so simple to make its ridiculous. You have 2 ways to do it.

First up is mixing one serving (50g) with around 150-180 ml of water or milk in a standard shaker. You can drink it right away, but its best to put it in the fridge for around 15 minutes or so, just to allow it to ‘set’ slightly.

Even without placing it in the fridge, you’ll need to eat this with a spoon as you would a dessert. You won’t be able to drink it as you would a protein shake. Placing it in the fridge just chills it slightly, enhancing the dessert texture.

The second way, and the way I make them is to;

1. Place your protein dessert mix into a bowl or food tub.
2. Add in small increments of water or milk whilst mixing the powder and liquid.
3. This will slowly form a smooth paste.
4. Keep adding your liquid and mixing until you get the desired consistency.
5. I like to add as much as possible, whilst maintaining the dessert texture, so i get more volume out of it.
6. I then put it in the fridge for 15-30 minutes, and its ready to go.

I find preparing the protein dessert like this leads to a far bigger portion, and is more filling. Perfect for flexible dieters looking to make their macro’s stretch as far as possible!

Taste & Texture

The taste and texture of MyProtein’s Protein Dessert is similar to regular casein ( when mixed to a dessert type texture), but not quite the same.

Protein Dessert is much more like a regular dessert you’d find in a supermarket chilled isle.

I really enjoy mixing casein protein up think, so its like a dessert type texture, however my girlfriend isn’t so keen on it. When she tried the strawberry protein dessert though she enjoyed it.

I gave my Mam some of the chocolate to try, and she couldn’t tell it was a ‘protein dessert’. That’s usually a good sign coming from Mammy!

The strawberry and banana flavours of Protein Dessert remind me so much of angel delight. Whipped and light, with plenty of volume.

The chocolate flavour is very similar, however reminds me more so of a chocolate mousse, as opposed to angel delight. The closest comparison I could make would be a dairy milk or rolo dessert.

Each of the flavours tastes exactly as you’d expect. The chocolate didn’t taste bitter, or overly sweet. The strawberry and banana flavours were very natural, not artifical or sickly.

What’s great is that I find one serving to be enough. The consistency of the dessert, along with the strength of the flavour is just enough. It’s not too heavy and doesn’t make me feel sick. For me personally, i’d find that 2 servings would probably feel me leaving sickly.

To get the most out of this, i’d definitely recommend following the instructions from MyProtein and placing it in the fridge for 15 minutes or more. It adds a nice chill to it, and makes the final dessert slightly more firm.

MyProtein Protein Dessert is the perfect treat for meatheads, bodybuilders, healthy eaters, or anyone looking to lose weight.

I wouldn’t use it as often as I would a regular protein shake, however I don’t think a ‘normal’ person who isn’t concerned with their diet would eat dessert every day either.

Protein Dessert comes in handy as a snack that i’d have every now and then, when i want something out of the ordinary or have a really bad craving for a dessert or something sweet.

It contains high quality slow and release protein sources. Each serving provides 31g of protein, with minimal fat and carbs.

It’s not a half-arsed ‘healthy dessert’ attempt that tastes like crap.

If you don’t like angel delight or mousse then this won’t convert you, and I wouldn’t recommend it to you.

Likewise I wouldn’t recommend this as a replacement for your regular protein powder or protein shake.

I would however 100% recommend having a bag of Myprotein’s protein dessert mix to always be stocked in your cupboard for whenever you fancy a dessert, and don’t want to break away from your diet.
