I’ve reviewed a ton of My Protein Supplements on the site. However pre-workouts are something i’ve never covered from My Protein. Why? Well because their pre workout range isn’t very prominent. They have a lot of amino acid blends, all in one post workout shakes, such as Hurricane XS, along with protein blends.
However their pre-workout range is a bit meh. Its as if they’ve just let competitors such as The Protein Works overtake them with supplements such as Raze or Genesis.
That is until now. I’ve been using MYPRE, the first real (in my opinion) pre workout from My Protein. It’s been available in the US market for quite a while now, however the UK are only just getting it.
Read my entire MYPRE Review to see if it’s worth your money.
What is MYPRE?
MYPRE is a pre workout supplement, intended to be used 30 minutes prior to exercises. It’s intended to increase energy & focus, along with enhancing performance through the ingredients used.
A lot of pre-workout supplements rely purely on a catchy name, eye popping tub design, and the propaganda of teenagers claiming it to be the “best buzz ever” to help it succeed.
MyProtein takes a different route however. No flashy packaging. No silly slogan. No “hardcore” font on the tub. Where MyProtein delivers with their MYPRE pre workout supplement is in its ingredients. This is what is important when it comes down to supplement effectiveness and value.
Just one look at the MYPRE ingredients list shows that MyProtein have finally started to list actually quantities of the ingredients used, much like GoNutrition, The Protein Works and Sci-MX. Its about time!
MYPRE Ingredients
Here is what you’ll get per 2 scoops, which is the serving size i use, and what i’d recommend you take.
Beta Alanaine – 3g
Creatine – 4g
Caffeine – 400mg
BCAA – 4g
L-Citrulline Malate – 3g
L-Arginine – 1g
On top of this, MYPRE also contains a vitamins & mineral blend, along with Essential Amino Acids.
What is confusing is that the supplement facts on the tub shows a proprietary blend, whereas the official MyProtein website lists the exact quantities. This is definitely something they should include on the tubs.
If reading the list of ingredients have left you looking like Homer Simpson deciding whether he needs to scratch his head or his ass, then here is a run down of what each does.
Beta Alanine
Beta alanine is a naturally occuring amino acid. When exercising, hydrogen ions build up, lowering the PH levels within the muscle, making them fatigue.
Supplementing with beta alanine prior to a workout will increase muscle carnosine levels, which helps reduce muscle fatigue and lactic acid.
This means you can train with a higher level of intensity during a workout, either for heavier weight or for more reps before muscle fatigue and failure sets in. Training past a ‘natural’ failure point will put more stress on the muscle, and allow you to make greater gains.
Beta Alanine also leads gives a ‘tingling’ sensation. This is what many people, foolishly, rate the effectiveness of a pre workout supplement from. In our Jack3d review, my buddy Ben said that the ‘buzz’ he received from taking that was awesome. However the product as a whole, he rated very poorly.
The tingling sensation is just a side effective. Some people do not suffer this side effect. The ‘tingling’ has no baring on the effectiveness of a pre-workout supplement.
Creatine
Creatine is the most studied and proven to work supplement available. I’ve covered creatine in depth in another article, which can read here.
The most popular creatine is creatine monohydrate. MYPRE contains a mixture of Creatine HCl, Ethyl Ester, Monohydrate and creapure.
I rate creapure very highly. Its a superior form of creatine monohydrate, which is the most widely research type of creatine. The other 2 types of creatine, whilst not as researched have mixed opinions.
Some love them, some claim them to be not as effective as monohydrate or creapure. The problem with monohydrate however, is that if you’re a “non responder”, you will not really see the benefits. However if you’re using a variety of creatine sources, you are increasing your bodies ability to use it effecitvely, and see the results of it.
Creatine is cheap, so many companies add it to pre-workouts or supplement blends to ‘pad it out”. This isn’t the case with MYPRE however, at least not in my opinion.

Caffeine
Everyone knows that caffeine helps to “perk you up”. Caffeine increase cognitive function, and can help to improve endurance and give a higher level of energy. Exactly what you’re wanting prior to a workout.
From my research, caffeine dosage for exercise purpose is most effective between 200mg-600mg. A 400mg dose of caffeine, per 2 scoops, is almost “perfect” for a pre workout boost.
Branch Chain Amino Acids
Branch Chained Amino Acids contain Leuicine, Isoleucine, Valine. These are essential for muscle recovery, preventing your body entering a catabolic state, and encouraging muscle growth.
Exercising and lifting heavy puts your body into a catabolic state. Taking bcaa prior to exercise will help ensure that your muscle’s are fueled with the right amino acids to prevent catoblism. It will also help you train longer and harder.
Citruline Malate & L-Arginine
These are the amino acids that give you a greater pump. As Arnold said, the pump is like “cumming”. Think of citruline malate and l-arginine as taking your orgasm (the pump) and enhancing it by 10.
The pump fades 20 minutes after a workout though. So what are the benefits of this for making gains though?
These ingredients increase Nitric Oxide within the body. This increases blood flow to the muscle, which helps funnel nutrients to the muscle.
Ingredients Summary
On top of this, you’re also gaining a blend of vitamins & minerals, along with a full range of essential amino acids, to work in synergy with the bcaa.
On paper, the MYPRE ingredients list is the perfect pre-workout. It has everything to increase energy levels and alertness. Enhance performance and output when training. Provide a greater pump, and offset muscle fatigue.
Just how effective is MYPRE as a pre-workout supplement though? Here are my thoughts.
Effectiveness
Based on the ingredients list and supplement facts, you definitely want to go with 2 scoops of MYPRE. That’s exactly what I did the first time I used it, and have continued to do so.
After a long weekend break to London, I returned home on Monday feeling ran down. I was tired from late nights and early mornings. I wish I had took a step-o-meter with me to see how many miles id walked over the weekend.
So my Monday consisted of a 3 and a half hour train journey home, taking care of some business, before hitting chest & triceps on the evening. (Chest on a monday… don’t judge me!)
I was feeling pretty “run down” and to be honest, could have easily skipped the workout, and just put it down as another rest day. However I hate doing that, and to be honest, the thought never seriously crossed my mind.
I took 2 scoops of MYPRE around 40 minutes before I actually started working out. I was aching from the weekend, so I felt very tight on my warm up sets. I don’t suffer from the beta alanine tingles, so i can’t pass judgement on that.
However once I was warmed up, I felt that ‘tired’ feeling almost vanish. Considering my diet that day been low carbs, only around 40grams for the entire day (which is very unusual for me) i had an awesome pump.
This wasn’t a placebo effect. It really was an awesome pump. I didn’t find myself overly fatigued through the workout. Not because I wasn’t training hard, but because I felt energised.
After 12 working sets of chest, i then moved onto triceps. I felt relatively fresh, considering i had just hammered chest. 5 sets in my triceps felt like balloons. Again, this wasn’t a placebo effect. I’ve covered a ton of pre-workouts in supplement reviews, so it’s not like this was something brand new to me. The last time i was surpsied with the effectiveness of a pre workout was probably using SCI-MX X-PLODE.
This particular workout was a high volume workout, so I was shooting for sets with a rep range of 12-14. I genuinely felt that I was able to squeeze out a few extra reps, particularly on the pec deck, and dips.
Pro-longed use of MYPRE, I believe would aid with recovery thanks to the amino acids & bcaa. Pump would be increased, as it was in this one workout, due to the Nitric Oxide ingredients. I felt like my performance was enhanced, especially given my tired condition prior to the workout, so pro-longed use of it would (in my opinion) lead to greater gains.
How much? That’s hard to say.
Don’t think that adding MYPRE to the rest of your my protein supplement stack will make from go from Brunce Banner to The Hulk in 4 weeks.
However if you have realistic expectations of what a pre-workout can do, and understand why you should use a pre-workout, then you will be pleased with how you perform in the gym when taking MYPRE.
Taste & Mixability
My Protein have really upped their game over the past few months with their flavours and product innovations. I’ve always praised GoNutrition & The Protein Works for their range of flavours, surpassing MyProtein’s choice in every way.
However over the past few months, the range of flavours across all their supplements have increased. I even had to updated my impact whey review to reflect the range of flavours available.
MYPRE is available in 7 flavours. If you use BCAA, Glutamine or Creatine from MyProtein, then these flavours may look familiar: blue raspberry, grape, lemon & lime, orange, raspberry lemonade, sour apple, watermelon.
I’ve been using the watermelon flavour which tastes – ok. It’s not the type of flavour that makes me crave more of it. Equally, it’s not a bad taste. I certainly didn’t struggle drinking it.
I’ve tried the sour apple, lemon & lime and raspberry lemonade flavours of some of MyProtein’s other supplements and they taste awesome. I’d love to give the blue raspberry a try next.
Mixability, this is where it suffers. It mixed fine, however it left a large amount of “froth” when mixed. I certainly don’t like giving head, however MYPRE delivered plenty.
After drinking it, i added a little more water to dilute the remaining froth. I used just over 200ml of water. I’d recommend adding a minimum of 300 to try and prevent the frothy rearing its ugly head.
Value For Money
You can pick up a 500g tub of MYPRE for £24.99.
Taking it at 1 scoop, you’ll get around 30-31 servings out of this, however 2 scoops which is the real dosage, you’re looking at around 15-16 servings. That’s around £1.66 per serving.
Using any of our myprotein discount codes will let you save anywhere from 10-30% on this however.
At under £25 a tub, MYPRE delivers when it comes to value for money. If you’re not convinced, just take another look at the ingredients list.
It isn’t padded with anything to try and hike up the cost, without adding value. Every ingredient in MYPRE is there to increase and enhance performance. Adding value to the product, and making it worth the price tag.
