High protein Pancakes are one of the most popular snack/meals among the fitness community. A quick scroll through facebook, twitter or instagram, and i think im scrolling through a pancake recipe feed.
Whether it is the simple egg & bananas protein pancake recipe, or a pre-mix buy a well-known brand (such as the myprotein pancake mix reviewed on site) – social media is swamped with photos of delicious looking pancakes (and each time I see them I get hungry…).
The traditional pancake recipe, however, is not particularly macro-friendly. Regular pancakes are certainly not the best option for someone watching their caloric intake when dieting due to the high carb content (and how many you need to eat to feel full!).
As a result, multiple companies have come up with high protein pancake mixes. Going to amazon, I came across the Matrix Nutrition Pancake mix and thought I’d give it a try.
It sounded decent, was priced reasonably, so i got it. Here is my Matrix Pancake Mix Review.
THE STATS
On amazon, I paid £13.99 for a 1kg container. At 20 servings per container, this leaves me with a serving of high protein pancakes costing just £0.65. In comparison to protein supplements, such as impact whey, or the most recent protein i’ve been using, Reflex Instant Whey this is quite expensive. But I guess its high protein pancakes, not just a protein powder. Pancakes are worth it.
The ingredient list is shorter than most supplement products, and includes:
Whey protein concentrate
Whole egg powder
Micronized oat flour
Milk powder
Peptide bonded glutamine
Milk protein concentrate
Flavoring
Sweetener: sucralose.
At least I know about what all of this means. Yes, it is not all whey protein, but the blend does the job. The combination of fast acting whey, medium acting egg, and slow releasing milk protein means that your muscle is being fed with an optimal serving of protein.
Looking at the nutritional value, one really cannot complain. A 50g scoop adds up to 203cal / 32P/ 8.5C/ 4F (0.5 fibre). For a proper meal, these macros are pretty decent.
Using the Matrix Pancake Mix
The instructions for making these pancakes are incredibly easy.
- Mix the Matrix pancake mix with water.
- Let it sit for 2 minutes.
- Pour mixture into a pre-heated frying pan.
I tried preparing them different ways, either making one big pancake, or a stack of a couple of small ones. For me, a female (who lifts!) the serving size is perfect. A big guy might want to go for two servings of the Matrix pancake mix though!
Taste
The pancake mix honestly does not taste like much by itself. Even though it does have sweetener on the ingredients list, sweet is not a word I would use whilst tasting them. By themself they’re quite bland.
However, because of this somewhat “bland base”, it means that the Matrix high protein pancakes makes them a good base for both sweet and savory pancakes. If you want to use toppings, this is perfect. If you just want to nibble on them by themselves, you might want to add flavor drops into the mix, along with some stevia.
Texture
This is definitely not the fluffy pancake you would get at the average american diner. It is doughy & very satisfyingly to chew. The very first pancake I accidentally cooked a little too long, and it was almost cookie-like. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but now that I am paying close attention they usually turn out less dense.
It might take you a few times to get it right, but when you find the way you like them, you’ll be able to make them easy every time!

Post Eats
These are some serious pancakes we are talking about here. It is not like you’d eat them and then have another meal in an hour.
I can run for quite a long time on these protein pancakes. They are that filling (and I am a bottomless pitt).
However, I also have to say that they can sit quite heavily in the stomach. You definitely feel them. I guess it is the prize you pay for not getting hungry again after an hour.
I am also not sure if my stomach really enjoys the pancakes as much as my mouth, but that might be a personal issue. That’s why I would not recommend eating them every day.

The Bottom Line
As an occasional high protein pancake snack, the Matrix pancake mix does the job. These protein pancakes are easy to make and the macros are pretty amazing.
The end result is not fluffy, but incredibly satisfying and very filling.
However, I would not recommend Matrix Protein Pancakes as a daily meal, not just because it is quite pricy, but because you might feel like you are turning into the food you just ate – a big, round pancake.
