Dynabar Protein Bar Review

After trying so many protein bars, you sometimes have to skew your expectations when trying a new brand. The packaging looks completely different to anything you’ve ever seen. The name is spun slightly different, it’s not just chocolate mint, ice chocolate mint ice cream!You have to try this “new” flavour.

The reality of tasting and reviewing protein bars is that im faced with a lot of disappointment. Just like my parents probably were when I told them I wanted to be a bodybuilder, despite obtaining a first class honours degree & master in business & marketing.

Oh how I jest.

However- I expected “much of the same” from the Dynabar Protein bar, from Protein Dynamix. However, just as I was in my DynaPro Anytime review, I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted something that actually resembled an edible chocolate bar. As opposed to something that tasted like an ill-forgotten reject from Willy Wonka’s Grooming Factory. Sorry, I mean chocolate factory.

I recently gave Protein Dynamix Protein Bar a try, and decided to tell all in this Dynabar Protein Bar review.

What would you get if you crossed a Lion Bar, Toffee Crisp, and a protein blend? No this isn’t some trick GCSE Exam question that you’ll spend an hour on (in a 1 hour 30 minute timed exam), only to then half-ass a guess and leave yourself recklessly scribbling your way through the rest of the paper, with one eye on the exam paper, and the other fixed firmly on the clock, as your heart rate rises faster than the remainder of your exam goes.

No, it’s not that all. In fact, the result is something quite nice indeed. The answer to that chocolate conundrum is a Dynabar protein bar, from Protein Dynamix.

Protein Dynamix have positioned the Dynabar Protein bar almost in middle of the field between a great tasting protein snack, and a macro friendly chocolate bar. Sure the sugars and fat’s could be a little lower, especially compared to the fiber based protein bars. However this isn’t trying to replicate a fiber based bar. This isn’t trying to follow suit of the many other similar tasting protein bars available.

The Dynabar is unique, and unlike any protein bar i’ve had before.

It’s for this reason I enjoyed the Dynabar as much as I did. Rather than it being a clone of another bar, in different packaging, or a slightly different flavour, the Dynabar is a genuinely unique tasting protein bar.

Taste / Texture / Aesthetics

As I’ve mentioned above, the best comparison to make is a cross between a lion bar and toffee crisp. The centre of the bar is soft, with a thick layer of chunky chocolate surrounding it. Sandwhiched between this is a golden bridge of caramel, and a galaxy of “crispies”. From description alone, this may sound similar to Protein Chox from MyProtein. However the two are completely different.

The soft “protein” centre is exactly that – soft. It’s no jaw achingly chewy. It’s not rubbery chewy. It’s just soft. This is where the vanilla flavour bursts from. The golden layer of caramel compliments not only the vanilla tasting centre, but the array of crispies, entangled in the chunky chocolate coating.

The crispies run through the entirety of the chocolate, giving it a rough, rocky look, much like that of a lion bar.

Protein Dynamix boasts that 79% of people surveyed at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre voted this the best tasting protein bar.

For me personally, it doesn’t quite earn the mantle of best tasting. However, this is completely subjective, and will differ from taste bud to taste bud.

I prefer a peanut butter coated bar packed with candy, such as an Oh Yeah Bar. Although this could be because im a peanut butter addict….

However, whilst the Dynabar isn’t my favourite protein bar, it’s definitely one i’d place on the high end of “great”. Just like Tony the tiger said.

I’d like to see a broader range of flavours available. For example Peanut Butter Combat Crunch I don’t like. However I love their cinnamon bar. They’re both similar textures, so its the difference in flavour that I like & dislike.

The texture of Dynabar that Protein Dynamix has crafted is absolutely spot on. With a range of different flavours, then im sure this could creep up even further in my estimations.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy an entire box of them at RRP, I don’t like them that much. However, if they were on sale or if I used a Protein Discount Code, i’d consider getting stocked up with a box.

If they were sold in my local supermarket or supplement store, then i would definitely buy them on a fairly frequent basis when I had a desire for something that wasn’t plain chicken breast.

Nutrition & Macros

For a chocolate styled protein bar, Dynabar offers a decent macro profile. It won’t win any awards for being the lowest calorie bar, not by a long shot, but at the same time, its by no means a “glorified chocolate bar”

Per bar; 64g

• Protein 20g
• Carbs 25g – Sugar 15g
• Fat 11g

The ratio of protein:carbs:fat is good in my opinion. The fat isn’t too high, however the sugar is on the higher side of what i’d like. The taste wouldn’t be possible without it however.

Quest Bars can spin their “net carb content” all they went, 25g of carbs is 25g of carbs, albeit this has far less fiber. Overall it’s a macro friendly bar, that more importantly, tastes spot on, and packs the protein you’re looking for.

Value

Each bar is a 64g serving. They are a generous size. They are by no means small. Likewise, they aren’t overly chunky, or wide, making them too “messy” or crumbly to eat.

Im not aware of being able to buy the bars as a single unit (yet) – hopefully Protein Dynamix can make their way into supplement stores and supermarkets. If some of the crap i’ve seen Holland & Barrett sell makes it onto shelves, there is no reason why Protein Dynamix won’t be able to get their Dynabar into stores.

However you can currently pick up a single box of 12 bars for £17.49, or 2 boxes for £29.99. This means each bar is priced at:

• Based on 1 box:£1.46
• Based on 2 boxes£1.25

At £1.46 these are a good buy, and at £1.25 they’re an absolute steal.

The only thing I believe holding first time triers off at this point is having to commit to buying a full box. I’ve been burned in the past by a few of the Quest Bar flavours. Purchasing a full box at a discounted price, only to find they taste like absolute crap.

I can genuinely say I don’t think you will be disappointed with the taste of Dynabar, however I do believe the fact that you cant buy a single bar will put some folks off.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a protein bar that tastes like an actual nice tasting chocolate bar, and provides you with a good serving of protein, give me a hell yeah.

Then give this a go. I went into this Dynabar Protein Bar Review with the expectation of it being an average, “samey” protein bar, no different to 85% of the other bars i’ve tried. What I left with was a smile on my face, and taste on my buds.

When I give a protein fortified snack to my Mam and she like’s it, I know it must taste good. That’s what Dynabar is.

Priced at £1.46 or £1.25 depending on how many boxes you buy, you can’t go wrong.

The most disappointing thing about the Dynabar is the lack of flavours. Sure, the flavour they’ve made is great, however a choice would be good. The lack of flavours is the biggest gripe I had with their protein powder in my Dynapro Anytime review. Hopefully, as the Protein Dynamix grows, and becomes more popular, a wider range of flavours will be added.

There is definitely potential here for Protein Dynamix to create a broad spectrum of flavours and build upon the foundation’s of what they’ve created.

Yes If…

• You love lion bars or chocolate bars
• If you’re sick of protein bars all tasting very similar, and looking for something that is genuinely different

No If…

• You don’t like caramel or rice crispies
• You’re looking for a high fiber bar
